The Icing Thief

FINALLY... FINALLY... I am beginning to feel like a person.

What a totally lousy time to get sick.

Just saying.

The last week has been a total blur.  Mainly because I spent most of it under the covers.

I'm out and about but still trying to get my bearings so give me time.

Somewhere in the last week my oldest son turned 18.

I WAS SICK ON HIS 18TH BIRTHDAY!!

Poor Rob had to make the cake despite being in the middle of a massive garage renovating project to make room for our BiblioPlan curriculum.  But he willingly and lovingly set about the task of making it before Ben came home from school. (It is exam week which is a lousy way to spend your 18th birthday)

Unfortunately we lacked any kind of canned, easy to use icing for the cake.  I was in no condition to run to the store and Rob didn't have time.  So we dragged out cookbooks, took inventory of ingredients and compared recipes to the ingredients we had on hand.  We picked one recipe that called for 3 cups of confectionery sugar.  We had 2 1/2 but that wasn't going to stop us.  With a little creativity we had a great idea for a decent icing to go on the cake.

Rob set the sugar aside on the counter to make after the cake cooked and cooled.

Did I ever tell you that our littlest LOVES anything sweet.

And a bowl of confectionery sugar sitting on the counter....

Well....

Let's just say that poor Rob's 2 1/2 cups of confectionery sugar for the cake decreased considerably when a certain little Icing Thief decided to stick his face into the bowl.

OOPS....

Not to be deterred though.... Rob found some other ingredients and whipped up an icing that tasted a little bit like caramel.  It was definitely different!!

Ben didn't mind.

18 Hershey's Kisses more than made up for the strange icing!

I can't believe my oldest is 18.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN

I LOVE YOU MORE!
