Big Brothers...

Three brothers... baking cookies together...

I only captured ONE SHOT before the oldest ran out of the kitchen.  Stinker!

If Elijah isn't singing, reading a book or working on one of his many inventions.... this is where you will find him....

either here...

or here....

And when Ben isn't running, swimming or exercising....

(Thanksgiving Day 5K)

You will often find him doing this.....

or this...

I'm so glad that Aaron has these two big brothers to help guide him....

God is good.

Aaron's Thanksgiving

Sometimes we forget that our little guy with the cute dimples and quick smile spent six years in isolation.  Sometimes we forget.

Until we travel in the car for two sleeps to my brother's house for a wonderful family get-together.

THEN we are confronted with Aaron's reality.

The change.  The noise.  The chaos.  The confusion.

Sometimes we forget because at home he is secure and content.  At home he has routine and sameness that his little mind and body crave.

But mix him in with a whole host of people, all older, bigger and louder and our little guy with the ready smile and cute dimples doesn't quite know how to handle the situation.

Thus, Thanksgiving was a bit lost on Aaron.  He spent the first 24 hours at my brother's house out of sorts, upset and on edge.  We honestly didn't know what to do.  It has been so long since he has been THAT out of focus that we were a bit blindsided by his frustration.  Right before we sat down for the amazing feast prepared by so many in our family, we had to take Aaron downstairs and just put him in bed.  He was angry, kicking and frustrated.  He NEVER goes to bed in the middle of the day but we were at a loss as to how to deal with him.  We left him down there for about 10 minutes (for Aaron this was a massive amount of alone time) and then I went down.  That was all he needed.  10 minutes to pull himself together.  He came out of bed talking and animated and ready to finish out his time with family with his trademark dimples and smile.

It was a reminder to us that even though our littlest has come very far indeed, much healing of his heart and mind still needs to take place.  He's just a little boy who spent a lot of years struggling to keep his head above the water.

THANKFULLY everyone understood.

No one blinked.  No one was bothered.

Secure in a family.

Fatherless Friday

Two little boys.  Pictures from a year ago.

Angel Tree Pictures

Spencer and Brent.

Matching outfits.... or maybe they just took the outfit off the one and put it on the other so they could take the pictures.  Not an uncommon occurence.

Two little boys.

Their angel tree pictures from a year ago.

What a difference a year makes....

Spencer - Spencer had a family commit to him.

Brent - Brent was transferred.

Then Spencer lost his family.

Two little boys.

Neither has a  Mama.

Neither has anything to smile about.

Brent is a Lost Boy and Spencer will be soon....

Two little boys on this Fatherless Friday.

Spencer and Brent.

Spencer is my Angel Tree boy.  Brent is too old.

Two little boys.

Little Lost Boys without a home.

Boys who will spend the rest of their lives behind walls unless someone somewhere crosses the ocean.

Please.

I don't want to do this again next year.

How?

How can I reconcile this picture......

With this???

How can I look at my healthy, happy and vibrant sons...

And not weep when confronted with this 15 year old girl??

How can I spend my days complaining of all the things I do not have....

When I see the sorrow in this 10 year old child's eyes.

How can I go happy-go-lucky through my days,

When I am confronted with this...a twelve year old...

How?

How can I reconcile my life and all that God has given me when I see this four year old?

How?

How can I?

All these children.... all of them hanging on for life by a thread.  All of them in the same orphanage.  All of them in desperate condition.

All of them.

How can I go through my days without leaking tears constantly when I am forced to confront their reality?

HOW?

I can because all of these children - all of them on this page - all of them have families who are working themselves into a frenzy to go get them.  All of them have Mama's and Papa's who are going to be crossing the ocean to bring them home.

All of them.

This one is already home.

Well... not quite home.  She is currently at the hospital.  Her Mama and Papa are keeping vigil by her side.

Loving every single bit of her tiny 9 1/2 year old body.

Nine years old.

Nine years.

Dear Lord.

I can go about my day rejoicing.  Giving THANKS.  Praising God.  Because HE HAS RAISED UP FAMILIES.  The tiny cries of these helpless, desperate children have been heard.  They are being rescued.  THANKS BE TO GOD!!

Thanks be to God.

But they are not the only ones.  Many are still waiting.  Trapped in their cribs.  Barely alive.  Desperately in need.

How?

Our God is Stronger!

The groans of the adoptive parent.  They spin all around me this morning.  There are so many who are wading in the miry process wondering if they will ever get through intact.  Stories not yet unfolded.  The end too far out of sight to allow them to take heart.

How to share.  How to convey their struggle so that you know how to pray.

In one country a child waits.  She has waited for NINE years.  Abandoned when she was but a day old because she was blessed with an extra chromosome.  Her RR name is Valerie.

She has a family who desperately want her.  They have been working for over a year to get her.  They are fully funded and ready to get on the plane.  But they have just been told - after a year of wading through the muck - that they are NOT good enough.  The government in that country has decided that the child deserves a better family.  WHAT??   This family has already adopted several children from that country.  Who better??  Please dear church, pray for this family.  Pray for Valerie.  Pray that hearts will be changed.  Please pray.  A little girl's future hangs in the balance.

Another family - here in our country - is in complete limbo, waiting to see if the child they love with all their being will be allowed to be part of their family.  It is complicated and hard.  Their little guy, Ethan, is medically fragile. His adoptive family lives in one state but recently he was transferred to another state for treatment.  This means that they may lose him.   There just are no words to say to this family except that we are praying.  Praying for Ethan's healing and praying that he would allowed to be not just the son of their hearts but their son in every other sense.

And then there is the family in another country who also has ALL the money they need to finish their adoption.  But again, the door has been shut by a governmental agency.  And so an older child waits.  And a family is left with empty arms.  They are left to pray that hearts will be changed.  They will appeal again in January.  Though I can't share their name here I ask that you pray.  Another child hangs in the balance.

And the dear family who is adopting a child from a country that has just passed a law stating that every orphaned child must be rejected by THREE foster families before they are deemed fit for international adoption.

The grief this has caused - the agony of the wait.  They are choosing to move forward in FAITH that God will make a way to the child HE has called them to adopt.  Adelyn.  They need our prayers as they move forward.  Their blog is HERE.

And the families who are adopting from Aaron's former country.  What honestly can I say about these families except that we are groaning in prayer with them as they wade through the current mess that is taking place.  Back in late spring new laws were passed.  The agency that processed adoptions would be shut down and a new agency started.  On top of that, the list of children with special needs was changed.  Many of the Reece's Rainbow children, some who had families in process to get them, had to be removed from the website.  They did not make the list.

Families who were ready to cross the ocean had to reject their travel dates because their child was no longer adoptable.  Who can count their tears?  The special needs list was supposed to be revised in October.  But it is now November 21 and the list has been left untouched.  So families continue to wait.  They don't see an end.  They are stuck in the middle of the process with held breathe.  And the changing of the agencies has bogged the process for the other families whose children are on the list.  Right now everything is frozen.  And so everyone waits.

It seems so hopeless for so many.  Adoption is hard.  The enemy will not let go of these children without a fight.

But we are NOT alone.  We are NOT without hope.  Though the stories I shared are full of gloom and hope seems so far away... We hold on this truth....(thank you Chris Tomlin)

OUR God is stronger.  OUR God is Bigger.  God you are HIGHER than any other.  OUR God is healer - AWESOME in power.  OUR God.  OUR GOD.

And if Our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us, then what can stand against?

Into the darkness.... into enemy territory... into the pit of hell itself...

OUR GOD!!

People - We serve a LIVING AND MIGHTY GOD.  Our prayers are NOT empty words that float around into meaningless space.  Our prayers are a sweet aroma to a living God who desires to set the captive free.  We pray with hope.  We pray with joy.  We pray knowing that God is hearing and moving.  We pray in the reality that HE IS GOING TO WIN.  The outcome may not be exactly how we pictured.  We may not always get exactly what we wanted.  But in the end - when the final story has been told - we will marvel at the outcome and we will be in AWE at how HE WORKED AND MOVED.

So stand and pray this Monday morning.  Pray with these families as they lift their pleas before the throne of Grace.  Pray knowing that God hears.  Pray believing that in the end - the stories told will be stories filled with tears of joy, tears of relief, tears of praise.

Pray church.  Pray.

Wiped Out

Aaron is bouncing around here today like he didn't just spend 12 hours in the Shriner's van and 7 hours at the hospital yesterday.

Me - I am totally wiped out.

On days like today I feel like I am just way too old to be doing all of this!!

Our day at Shriner's was good.

THE BEST PART - MEETING TWO OF THE DEVOWE'S....

Meet Carolyn and Madeline...Another Reece's Rainbow family!!!

Madeline and Aaron are from the same country - adopted only a few months apart.

Their family prayed Aaron home.  Our family prayed Madeline home. (They then went back several months later to get Ethan).

As soon as Caroline and I saw each other - we hugged  like long-lost sisters.

I had a hard time keeping my tears back.  Precious moments with my sister-in-Christ.

Madeline is a total sweetheart.  Oh My Goodness.

She's also tiny.

And when we put her next to Aaron to take their picture..... She did what any sweet girl would do when placed next to the most handsome boy on the block....

She threw her little arm around him to hug him.

And he promptly growled at her!!

Never fear though... once she removed her arm.... He recovered....

How could he not with the prettiest girl on the block sitting next to him???

Oh Sweet Madeline.  You stole my heart yesterday!!

Aaron and I went from doctors to therapists to doctors to orthotics to therapists throughout the day!!

Tiring.

What we learned....

Aaron's feet .... are doing well.  He was fitted for some short braces that he will be able to wear during the day!  Woo Hoo!!  The long braces will be for nighttime use only!

Aaron's right arm ....looks great in terms of position... but the surgery did not accomplish what we hoped... He can't reach his mouth with his hand without one of us doing it for him.  Since that was the point of the surgery.... well...

So..... starting in January, we will make the 12 hour trek once a week for several months of serial casting on his arm.

It will have to be done S.L.O.W.L.Y and G.EN.T.L.Y.

It will take at least 2 months, maybe more.

Of course it will happen during the worst part of winter when snow and ice will threaten every week.

BUT - last year, during the same time, we survived 4 solid months of weekly trips up to Shriner's for his feet and we WILL survive these trips too...

Because God will provide and this little guy.... despite all his orneriness is worth it....

Off Again

Yep.... Aaron and I are dragging out of bed again early tomorrow morning (okay - the middle of the night) to make the long trip to Philly in the Shriner's van.  Another marathon round of visits with doctors and therapists.  I'm so glad my littlest has a great attitude about these trips.  If only I could get him to fall asleep in the van.....

Be Encouraged...

Judging by the outpouring of comments and facebook messages and e-mails I've received in the last 24 hours,  Jonah's (Tolly) story didn't just impact Rob and me.

Honestly, I needed Monday.

I needed to see Tolly and Alina.

I needed to see him in HIS MAMA'S ARMS.

I needed to be reminded WHY I continue to hammer away on this blog.

It is SO EASY to get discouraged.

It is so easy to wonder what in the world I am doing.

But seeing those two - holding them - being confronted with the reality that their adoption was pure and simple a RESCUE - it renews my spirit.  It renews Rob's spirit.

Both of those children would literally not have survived transfer.

So little.  So fragile.

I can't even allow my thoughts to go to the place of imagining Tolly in Aaron's old institute.  After seeing how tiny and precious and full of life he is - He would have been swallowed up there.

God KNEW he needed rescue.

It causes me to want to yell louder.

Dear Spencer.

He is on the brink of transfer.  He NEEDS A FAMILY NOW!

Artem.

He has been on the REECE'S RAINBOW site for years and years.  Where is his MAMA?  He has 16,562.00 in his grant account.  UNBELIEVABLE!!  How much longer must he wait?

So many many others.

I have to keep yelling.

I have to.

Otherwise I would miss events like this....

Seeing Tolly in his Mama's arms... during picture time... being ALL BOY...

I snapped the pictures and chuckled as I watched the scene play out...

Hey Tolly - Look at the camera....

Okay.. okay....I'm looking.... but my hands are a bit occupied.....

I got myself a good grip... now.... all I need to do is pull real hard!!...

Pooey....Mama made me let go but I will NOT give up....

Yes they are a handful.  Yes they are needy.  Yes they are fragile.  But they are firmly set in a family.  Well-loved.  Cherished.  A son.  A daughter.  A brother.  A sister.

Privileged to grow up to know and love the King of Kings.

It just doesn't get any better than that!

Be encouraged.  Keep yelling.

It does make a difference.
