124 Fatherless Babes

THERE ARE 124 ORPHANS ON THE LIST BELOW.

124 children without families.  124 children who are languishing in institutes across Eastern Europe and Asia.

124 who have less than 100 in their grant account. The vast majority have less than 50 in their account.  Some of them have less than 10.

How sad is that thought?

My boys have more in their savings accounts than these kids have in their grant accounts.

Sorrow upon sorrow for these kids who live in a world where even their underwear is not their own.

But even more than no money - most of these children have few who are advocating for them. Even less who are praying for them.  They are just kids on a numbered list.

On this Friday - before you go out to Walmart or Target or the nearest grocery store to buy bags and bags of Halloween candy and Halloween decorations and Halloween costumes... before you go out will you take a moment today and pick a few of these kids on this list.

Click their link and LOOK at them.  Pray for them.  Consider their circumstances.  Shed a few tears.  Cry out to the Lord on their behalf.  Donate to their grant account.

AND THEN WILL YOU LET ME KNOW??

Tell me WHO you considered.  Leave me a comment and let me know which child you prayed over today.  Tell me which child brought tears to your eyes.  Which child you donated to.

Please?

There are 124 kids on this list.

Can we possibly bless every child today on this list? I'm going to update throughout the day.  Mark in read that someone cared about them today.  I don't expect everyone to be able to donate but I am asking everyone to take a few minutes and care.

 Please!

If we don't care... who will?

Why Was I There?

The other day Aaron came wandering in the office while I was scrolling through the blog looking for a link.

He saw the picture from my blogpost where he is sitting on Rob's lap.

Our first day at the institute.  The day we first laid eyes on our little guy.

Aaron leaned up against me and stared at his picture.  In a quiet voice he asked me, "Why was I there?  Why?"

WHY WAS I THERE??

How in the world?

What could I say?

I pulled him into my lap and kissed him and focused on the fact that Mama and Papa wanted him, loved him and came and got him.

I couldn't answer his question.

How can I answer a question like that?  How?  How can I tell my sweet little boy the truth?  How can I explain to him the insane reasons for him being there?  He's disabled?  Wasn't wanted?  Was abandoned?  How do I get around those truths?

My sweet little guy was satisfied with my answer.  He nestled deep in my arms as we looked at the pictures and discussed how we came and got him.  It was enough for that day. A kiss and redirection.  I know it will not always satisfy but for now it is enough.

Why was I there?

Why?

There are so many more who ask the same question on the other side of the ocean.  Boys and girls helpless in their situation asking why? Why am I here?  Why?

Would that they had a Mama and Papa who would nestle them deep in their arms and kiss the why away for a while.  Kiss it away with words of love and protection.

Why are they there? Why?

------------------------

Pryce has been asking that question.

All 4 Pryce

Ever since he was transferred from his baby house to the older children's institute he has asked.  He is in a nice institute but still... he wonders and waits and hopes... For the first few months after he was transferred he cried himself to sleep at night.  Sorrow upon sorrow as he grieved the loss of the only home he had ever known.  Scared and lonely and unsure.  Unable to walk.  Shy. Quiet.  Sweet Pryce.

Little does he know that his world is getting ready to be turned upside down.  For a year now his parents have been trying to get through the adoption process.  It has been a tear-filled, anxiety-laden, nerve-wracking year that they hope never to repeat again but at the end of that tunnel is a little boy. An eight year old little boy, wheelchair bound, shy, quiet and longing with all his being to have a Mama and Papa who will nestle him in their arms and kiss away all his questions.

In just two weeks they leave.  In two weeks Pryce will discover that his longing for a family is over.  In two weeks.

The Burlingham's are still short of what they need to get Pryce.  Thousands short.  You see they didn't store up treasures this last year.  They kept giving.  I know this because I watched them.  I saw their hearts for the orphans.  They supported and helped and encouraged all the families who crossed the ocean and came back while they have sat sidelined.  They worked to raise their own funds while at the same time they worked to raise the funds of all those around them.  They lived out their faith this past year.  Believing that God would provide.  Now the end is near and the need is great.

Will you help them?  Get them over this last hurdle? Will you support them?  Encourage them in the same way they have encouraged so many others?

Encourage them so that one day soon they can pull a little boy into their lap and whisper love and hope into his heart.  You are wanted.  You are loved.  We are here.

Quiet

This blog is going quiet for a few days.

The last week of posts have completely wiped me out.

Writing about sheds and cages, brokenness and reminders.  I'm drained. Completely drained.

We will be gone for three days and I am going to make the most of the opportunity to just rest.  Restore.  Heal.  And most of all... enjoy my family!

In the meantime....

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!!  Reece's Rainbow is now in 2nd place.   PLEASE VOTE!!!

Sheds and Cages

Sometimes there are no words.

We spent six weeks staring at sheds and enclosures.

Not sheds with tools inside.  Not sheds for tractors or farm equipment.  Not storage sheds or dog sheds.

We spent six weeks staring at sheds that contained boys.

Moaning, groaning, miserable boys.

Eating sheds.

Containment sheds.

Cages.

Yes this is a cage.  The boy in the back of the gazebo was a runner and tended towards violence  so they would put him inside the 'cage' and put a 'guard' at the entrance.  The two of them sat there all day.  One watching.  One waiting.

From where we often sat and played with Aaron we could look down the path and see one of the sheds.  The door of the shed blocked by a bench so that the boys couldn't get out.  Aaron ran free while the boys inside sat and stared at the walls and listened to his laughter.

Sometimes there are no words.

Those sheds render me speechless.

I often wonder if people think I may be over sensationalizing the shed story.  Maybe I exaggerate.  Maybe I am playing the card too much.

I have no pictures to prove that the boys were inside the sheds.  I was not brave enough to point my camera when the boys were inside.

Where is my proof?

How can I convey to you the sorrow inside those walls?

Sometimes there are no words.

Sometimes the reality is more than I can bear.

Sometimes I have to look away because I can't stand what I see.

The following pictures are NOT from Aaron's institute.

But they are from the same country.

They are the grown-up version of Aaron's institute.

THIS IS THE FUTURE THAT FACES THE LOST BOYS.

GROWN UP SHEDS.  Grown up men sitting and doing nothing all day inside the sheds.

GROWN UP CAGES.

Sometimes there are NO words.

The boys who sit inside the sheds and cages at Aaron's institute will eventually graduate to sit inside these sheds and cages.

Those who are prone to run or violence will be placed inside the cage.

DO YOU SEE?  DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHY MY HEART IS BROKEN?

All the babes we are yelling for will eventually grow up.

THIS WAS THE LIFE AARON WAS DESTINED TO LIVE APART FROM THE GRACE OF GOD!!

This is what these children face...

Emmit and Hanson

Those who can walk or sit in a wheelchair will sit in sheds and cages.  Those who can't will just continue to live out their days laying in their cribs or beds.

SHEDS, CAGES, BEDS AND CRIBS.

Come Quickly Lord Jesus!

----------------------------------

Want to bless the men in those cages?  My dear blogging friend Natalie was the one who took those pictures.  She is currently ministering to a nearby mental institute for children but is able to visit these men too.  She has discovered that they LOVE apples.  Simple pleasures.  She has been buying apples and taking them to the men and they are beyond grateful for such a simple gift.  The mental institute sits on a large piece of property and after asking around, Natalie has gained permission to have 200 apple trees planted on the grounds.  Each apple tree costs between five and ten dollars.

Want to sponsor an apple tree?  I'm making it super easy for you.  No it isn't tax deductible.  I don't think the men care about that.  But make a donation to the chip-in so Natalie can get the trees planted as soon as possible.  It will take a few years for the apples to produce but the long-term benefit to that institute is well worth the wait.   200 apple trees for some desperately lonely men.

-----------------------------------

Reece's Rainbow is now in 2nd place in the Cultivate Wines Contest.  If we maintain that position  these sweet kids will each receive $1,000 in their grant account instead of $5,000.00.  One thousand dollars is nothing to sneeze out and I will be grateful for even that much for each child but honestly....  I  would much rather see each of them blessed with the full $5,000.00.

Please...

58 Words

This week we celebrate a milestone in Aaron's life.

The boy who was labeled severely mentally disabled is reading!

No, he isn't reading Shakespeare and he isn't racing through chapter books but  - soon people - soon!!

I'll be honest - reading is highly prized in our house.  Rob and I both were early and voracious readers and both Ben and Elijah were early and voracious readers.  Ben was so consumed with books that when he was little we had to develop a system where we read each of his books only ONCE a day and then put it on top of the refrigerator in 'time-out' until the next day.  By the end of the day his entire library was in piles on top of the fridge.  I kid you not!  Elijah was just as obsessed.  He was never found without a book from toddlerhood on.  He started reading way before we thought it possible and by the time he was in kindergarten he was giving his teacher fits as she tried to keep him occupied.

Of course we wanted Aaron to love books.

We dragged a bunch of board and picture books with us when we crossed the ocean and on our first day with him Rob pulled Aaron into his lap and showed him his first book.

Aaron loved looking at the books from day one!  And it was the ONLY time he would EVER agree to sit on either of our laps.  So we tried to read a LOT of books to him.

He knew absolutely nothing.  Everything we showed him in the books was a complete mystery.  We marveled at his complete lack of knowledge of ANYTHING.  We are talking a complete blank slate.  Aaron only knew about machinas (vehicles), planes and birds.  They were the things he could see and hear from his shed.

His language skills were nil to none and no one had ever taken the time to teach him anything.  Ever.  Yet he loved books from day one.  And as he moved out into the real world he began to make connections with the pictures in those books to real-life examples.  But he had so many holes in his understanding and his language  skills bordered on dismal for such a long period of time that we wondered if he would ever move from enjoying looking at books to being able to read them.

After working with him for two years and realizing that teaching him to read was a mountain I couldn't get over on my own (despite having taught numerous children to read) we made the decision to put him in a small Christian school.

He absolutely loves it.  He loves his teachers and all his 'peoples' (the children in his classes).  They have been amazing with him.  Our county provides no services for private school children except speech and only if we take him out of his class, drive him 20 minutes to the public school and have him take speech there.  We decided that it would be counterproductive for him to miss even a minute of school this year so we opted out of speech.  So he is in a school with no special services to accommodate his special needs and HE IS THRIVING.  They do whatever they can to make it easy for him to learn and he is learning.   And they love him.  They love him.

And this week he brought home his first real reading book. On Monday night he was supposed to read the first 3 pages.  It took almost an hour.  It was tough going as he labored through a host of short vowel words.  He was so proud of his accomplishment.  I breathed a sigh of relief that we got through the pages.

On Tuesday night he came home and announced he had to read the ENTIRE BOOK.  58 words.  I gasped.  How in the world?  If Monday night took an hour - how long was it going to take to get through the whole book.  I questioned the wisdom of pushing him so fast.

BOY WAS I WRONG.

My little son sat down next to me on the couch and he proceeded to read that entire book in half the time it took him to read it the day before.  THE LIGHTBULBS HAD CLICKED ON FOR HIM.  He still had to sound out each word but he was doing it at triple speed.  Aaron is reading.  He was sick yesterday and didn't go to school so I dragged out a whole host of phonics readers and he read a portion from each book.  He was beyond happy and I was in shock.

AARON CAN READ.

58 words.

I need some tissue.
