Only a Few Survive

Can you hear the giggles?  The bubbling over with joy?  The look of wonder? We have raised funds to send 100 orphans to camp!

ONE HUNDRED OUT OF FOUR HUNDRED THIS STEW IS TRYING TO FEED!!

Oh thank you to those who are giving.

Deb, Katy, Nicole, Mindy, Rachel, Heather, Tonya, Marianne, Katrina, Bettina, Kim, Mary, Erika, Cheryl, Crystal, Tobi, Amy, Madeleine, Genna, Heather, Rebecca, Andrea, Jennifer, Kori, Philip, Judith, Kelly, Jennifer, Candice, Joy, Kelley, Candice, Ashley, Cindy, Dee, Amanda, Brenda, Jessica, Patricia, Naomi, Beth, Gaye, Lori, Brooke, Lisa, Kat, Tom, Rebekah, David, Cheryl, Rosemary, Amy, Ryan, Cynthia, MayLynne, Anonymous X 17

You make ME smile.

They live in a world where they have been put away.  Discarded.

Some of them are not 'true' orphans.

That's the saddest part.

Some of them have families.

But poverty and drugs and broken homes and for a multitude of other reasons - they are put away.  The saddest part of the saddest part is that many of them are children of orphans.  The cycle repeating itself over and over and over again.

Orphans over there have no leverage.  No connections.  No props to pull themselves out of the pit they have been dropped into.  When they grow up and age out of the system (those who are not special needs and are allowed to age out) they are placed randomly in trade schools without any consideration of their strengths or abilities.  A monthly stipend (about 30 U.S. dollars from what I understand) is spent within days of receiving it by 15, 16, 17 year olds who have no idea how to budget and no loving parents to guide them in making good decisions.  They resort to stealing or selling themselves so that they can eat.  Drugs and alcohol become their escape.  Many are jailed.  Many die.  Some commit suicide.  And for many many of the girls.  The pretty ones.  They are snatched up into sex trafficking.

Only a few survive.

That is the reality.

It is a reality of despair and chaos and crisis.

And in the midst of this crisis - in the region where there are more orphans than any other region in their country... the ministry team we support is doing its work.

Each week traveling to the orphanages.  Internats.  Institutes.  Traveling so that they can BUILD RELATIONSHIPS.  Traveling so that they can learn the names and personalities and gifts and abilities of every single one of the orphans God has placed in their paths  Traveling so that they can help them as they grow up to find another way.  An alternative to the chaos.  An alternative to the despair.  A road that leads to hope.  Life.

This camp is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY.  Taking 600 orphans and investing in them for a week to 10 days a life-time of memories that will be good and wholesome and happy is so very worth dropping our nickels in their bucket.  The ministry team will spend those days knowing that they will see those same orphans again.  Week after week.  Year after year.  Cementing the relationships.

This is not a hit and run camp.

It isn't a camp where the ministry team is coming from the U.S. and will return after a week of exhausting fun. Yes.  Some will come from the U.S. to help.  But the core group.  The ones who are running the camp and doing the lion's share of the work.  They live there.  They work there.  It is their world.  Their home.  Their orphan crisis.

This is a camp where the ministry team has already laid down the foundation for many many many of these children.  A foundation of love and nurture.  A foundation where the children have learned that these people are kind and true.  They care.  They come back each week.  They hold them in their laps.  Listen to them.

It's a camp where long-term relationships will be formed.

The orphan crisis over there is overwhelming.

It is truly overwhelming.

Social orphans.  True orphans.

Orphans becoming parents to orphans.

Orphans dying.  Orphans sold.  Orphans lost.

So few are ever adopted.

Most are either locked away in institutes or are set adrift in a world that cares little about them.

Only a few survive.

That's why this camp is so worth our time and energy.  The investments that will be made are long-term and life-changing.

Please help us raise what we need to send all 600 to camp!!

300 are going.

300 are waiting!!

Sorry Bubba!

I'm leaving for Washington D.C. this morning.

I will be at the TEACH THEM DILIGENTLY Homeschool conference for the next three days.

Praying for strength, good conversations and good sales.

I just had to kiss my littlest goodbye.  I had to remind him to 'stay in the green' at school!  He doesn't like change.  It upsets the balance in his world.  It makes him a bit ornery!

He can't wait for summer.

One of my conferences is in Florida ... right smack across the street from Disney World.

A bit of a no-brainer to take all of us to that conference!

I mean if I have to get a hotel for ME that is actually a suite and sleeps SIX and if we are a family of FIVE... well....

Of course he has NO IDEA what Disney World is all about...

But he knows it is going to be FUN!

And Aaron is all about FUN!

He heard me at the table talking about the camp for the orphans.

He immediately decided that HE NEEDED TO GO TO THAT CAMP!

Sorry Bubba.

Orphans only.

And YOU ARE NOT AN ORPHAN!

Praise God and Praise God!!

These babes are orphans!  Last year they had the privilege of going to this camp.

In fact ALL the pictures I have been putting on this blog for the last weeks are from the camps last year!

Many of these same children will be back this year!

Last year they had a few hundred.  This year they are hoping for 600!

This Mulligan Stew is to help them reach that goal!

So far 92 children have been sponsored through our stew.

And 200 more from another source.

So 292 children get to go to camp!

THAT IS ALMOST HALF WAY!!

PRAISE GOD! PRAISE GOD!

THANK YOU TO EACH OF YOU WHO HAVE GIVEN SO FAR!!!

Deb, Katy, Nicole, Mindy, Rachel, Heather, Tonya, Marianne, Katrina, Bettina, Kim, Mary, Erika, Cheryl, Crystal, Tobi, Amy, Madeleine, Genna, Heather, Rebecca, Andrea, Jennifer, Kori, Philip, Judith, Kelly, Jennifer, Candice, Joy, Kelley, Candice, Ashley, Cindy, Dee, Amanda, Brenda, Jessica, Patricia, Naomi, Beth, Gaye, Lori, Brooke, Lisa, Kat, Tom, Rebekah, David, Cheryl, Rosemary, Amy, Ryan, Cynthia, Anonymous X 16

We have 308 children left to go!

HUGE NUMBER???

Absolutely!

But one child at a time - WE CAN DO THIS!

One single child at a time.

PLEASE TAKE PART!

We have 2 more weeks to get all 600 children to camp...

We can do this!!

Motherless on Mother's Day

It's Mother's day.

My mom died in 2001.  When I type in that number I am shocked at how long ago it is in numbers, yet the memories are still so vivid and sad.  Cancer.

My mom would have absolutely loved what we are doing.  She would have spoiled Aaron totally rotten (my dad already does). She had a heart for orphans and definitely had a heart for children with special needs.  In the last 5 years of her life she helped start a special Olympics program in her community.  Rob and I used to go to the events.  She was a woman on a mission.  I used to love watching her with all the kids.  She knew each one by name and cared deeply about them.  When she died the entire community mourned.

I wish she was here because she would be absolutely yelling her head off beside me to get these orphans to camp.

I wish she was here.

I'm having one of those days...

43 people have donated and 43 children now get to go to camp.

Deb, Katy, Nicole, Mindy, Rachel, Heather, Tonya, Marianne, Katrina, Bettina, Kim, Mary, Erika, Cheryl, Crystal, Tobi, Amy, Madeleine, Genna, Heather, Rebecca, Andrea, Jennifer, Kori, Philip, Judith, Kelly, Jennifer, Candice, Joy, Kelley, Candice, Ashley, Cindy, Dee, Anonymous X 8

To each of you - THANK YOU.

THANK YOU!!

Please help me love on the Motherless on this Mother's Day...

Please!!

We have 357 more children to go!

I know.  It is a HUGE number.  We have not made a lot of progress.

$60.00 removes a block.

But please.  Even if you don't have $60.00.... every single dollar helps!  It does.  It makes a HUGE difference.  43 people have donated and have raised enough to send 43 children to camp.  Not every one of those 43 gave $60.00.  Some gave more.  Some gave less.  Some only gave 5.00. BUT IT ADDS UP!

THAT IS WHY THIS IS CALLED A MULLIGAN STEW...

If we each throw into the pot what we have.. big and little offerings...

I Can't Do This Without You!

31 children are going to camp.

31 out of 400.

We have three weeks to raise the funds to get the other 369 over the wall.

I look at all those numbers and my eyes bulge a bit.

Yeah.

There are a lot of numbers on that grid!

It is a HUGE mountain.

This is just one little blog.

Breathe.  Breathe.

One child at a time.

Every single one matters.

It costs $60.00 to send one orphan to camp.

That's it.

We are paying $250.00 to send Elijah to Boy Scout Camp this summer.

We paid around $600.00 one year to send Ben to soccer camp.

Compared to those prizes - $60.00 is a drop in the bucket!

Please help me.

Sponsor an orphan for $60.00.

Give them memories they will never ever forget!

If you can't fully sponsor a child THAT IS OKAY!! Give what you can.  Every single donation matters. God multiplies our offerings.  He's kind that way.

Give and share.

I can't do this without you.

The World Had Changed For Us

I got to her office before she did.

I was nervous.  I didn't know what she would do.  How she felt about me being there.

The last time I saw her she was standing outside the gate crying as we drove away.  She had raged for hours before we left.  She didn't trust us.  She didn't believe that we truly cared about her Vanya.

I had nothing to fear.

When she saw me she grabbed me and hugged me in the tightest of embraces.  We laughed and then hugged again.

It was surreal.

I was in the same office.  Same stuffed animals on the shelves.  Same furniture.  Same view out the window.

But the world had changed for us.

We were no longer pulling in opposite directions for the same child.  We were now on the same team.  Caring together for the same boy.  Caring together for her Lost Boys.

She pulled out an envelope and gave it to me.

In it were pictures of Aaron.  Pictures we had sent.  Four families had followed in our footsteps.  Each family had given her pictures.  Those pictures were held and treasured.  Passed around for everyone to see.  She brought them out and showed me.  She showed me EVERY.SINGLE.ONE of those pictures.  Pictures I had taken.  Pictures I had sent.  I looked at them with her.  They meant the world.  He was safe. He was thriving.  He was loved.

We didn't walk away when we left that institute.  We didn't go back to our normal life.

We yelled for the Lost Boys we left behind.

We found a ministry team to go in and love on our boys.

A team that was already ministering to numerous orphanages and institutes and internats but who willingly and lovingly added our boys to their list.

We raised money.  We raised support for the team.  In 2012 and 2013 we did a Mulligan Stew and both times part of the stew went to the team for our Lost Boys.

We never told them what do with the money.

We trusted them.

They used it to build a relationship.  To open hearts.  To demonstrate love in action.

Last year they were given a big chunk of change.  Money donated from this blog.  Thousands donated.  Again.  No rules.  We just asked that it be used to bless the Lost Boys.

I sat in her office in December and she cried.

She cried as she shared that the money we had given repaired the heating system at the institute.  They were desperate.  Facing a winter without heat.  110 boys in heatless buildings.  She hugged me.  Again.

Thank you.  Thank you.

I can't imagine what they would have done if we had not donated that money.  I cannot imagine what life would have been like there without heat this past winter.

This year our Mulligan Stew is going to send 400 children to camp in a country that has gone a bit mad!  The region where the camps will be held is smack in the middle of a prime piece of property that their bigger neighbor would love to claim as his own.

Yet the ministry team is pressing forward.  Stepping out in faith.  They are building the camp.  Buying supplies.  Believing that if God has opened this door that HE will make a way.  They live in that country. They are facing the reality of a takeover on a very very personal level.  It is their world. Their country in chaos.  It is their brethren who are being threatened.  Yet they press on.

I know this team.  I trust them.  They are not Sunday-morning bench warmers.  They rolled up their sleeves a long time ago and have been doing the Lord's work no matter the circumstances.  And trust me. They have had a lot of circumstances hit them over the years that would have knocked many out of the game.  Orphan ministry is hard work.  This team doesn't quit.  They are diligent.  They are trustworthy.  They are single-minded.

We are raising $24,000 for them to send 400 children to camp.

400 precious orphans.

If something happens and they can't bring the children to their camp then they will take camp to the children.  At each orphanage.

If that isn't possible then they will take every single nickel donated and either use it for the orphans (covering the costs of broken heating systems etc) or they will set it aside so that they can use it for future camps.

It will NOT be used for anything but the orphans in that region.

It is a country in crisis so yes, it is a risk to donate money to a camp that may not happen.  But as long as the door is open and as long as the  way is clear - Camp Lela will happen.  And if their country breaks apart - then $24,000 will go a long way to meeting the needs of desperate directors who have already had their budgets cut by 50% because war is on their doorstep. Either way - every single dime donated is going for the care of orphans.

Personally, I am praying my heart out that nothing stands in the way of the camps.  Our son, Ben, has his heart set on going and helping at the camps.  Since I can't go - he will be the next best thing!  And the opportunity for the special needs children to get out of their dreary worlds to go to camp just brings me to my knees.

So Donate. And Pray.  And Share.

You money is not going to go to waste.

Orphans are going to be fed!

Let's get these kids to camp!!

So far 24 have been sponsored.

We have 376 left to go!

THANK YOU TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO HAS DONATED SO FAR!!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

This ends May 31st!

Mulligan Stew 2014

The news was horrible!!

Almost as soon as I hit send last Friday on my blogpost, FEEDING 400 ORPHANS, fighting broke out in the very area where the camps will be held.

People died.

Most of them were not citizens of that country.  They were instigators.  Terrorists. There to stir up trouble. And trouble came.

I e-mailed the ministry team.

What are you going to do?

They are pressing forward.

And I am standing beside them in full support.  The Lord opened a door for 600 orphans to go to camp this summer and come rain or snow or hail or WAR - those kids are going to camp!! Unless the Lord closes the door - they are pressing forward.

200 children have already been sponsored.

400 children are left.

It's a MULLIGAN STEW.

We have gathered a potful of ingredients in the hopes that many will be fed.

60 prizes have been donated for our stew.

400 children have been invited to our table.

FOUR HUNDRED MOUTHS TO FEED.

Each one so very precious and of great value.

Orphans.

I've been on my knees for weeks now.  $24,000 is a lot of money.  This is just one tiny blog.  I am not feeling very brave or strong or mighty.  I'm trembling.

But then I see pictures from the camp last year.  Where 250 children were able to run and play free.  And I just can't turn away. Despite how big this seems.

All I can do is share the need.

And Pray!

The children going to camp are living in orphanages and institutes and internats from villages outside the city.  They are the poorest of the poor.  They are going because God opened this door.

They will arrive at the camp without a toothbrush or a comb or a sleeping bag or pillow.  No Mama to pack their clothes.  No Papa to hug them one last time before they get on the bus.  They will come with just the clothes on their back.

Orphans.

Typical and special needs.  Older teens. Little ones.

This is their opportunity to get away.  To be children.  To laugh.  To run.  To play.  To sing.  To listen to stories about Jesus.  To be surrounded by volunteers who are there for the sole purpose of loving on them. Most of the children will have never ever experienced a camp like this.  It will be a totally new and amazing experience and honestly - I wish with all of my heart that I could be there to see them and love on them!

I can't be there but I can help make it possible.

Come rain or shine or war in their very backyard... these babes are going to camp!!

Here it is...

Our Mulligan Stew.

Our goal - Raise $24,000 so that 400 children can go to camp.
